African Safari Tanzania

Present-day Tanzania was once a German colony and later came under British colonial rule as Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Its name combines portions of the former countries’ names.

In 1964, Tanzania, which lies south of the equator in East Africa, below Uganda and Kenya, became a Great Lakes state. Today, the Indian Ocean, home to Zanzibar Island and its idyllic beaches, forms its eastern border. Mozambique is to its south, and numerous countries border it to the west. While Swahili is the official language, English is widely spoken. Tanzania is known for its blue-violet tanzanite mineral, found only in the Manyara Region. 

As of Spring 2026, the country had not banned trophy hunting. However, safari tourism is a growing business and helps fund wildlife conservation. With 22 national parks and 40 percent of the country’s land protected, Tanzania offers exceptional safari wildlife viewing.

Top natural attractions include Lake Victoria to the north and its Rubondo Island National Park. The Great Rift Valley, with exceptional landscape and magnificent views, extends beyond the country’s borders. Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 m (19,341 ft) and lies east of Mount Meru, the country’s second-highest mountain, in Arusha National Park. Visit Tarangire National Park and its namesake river to see crocodiles. Then travel west to Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater, an 8,000-year-old volcanic caldera, and Olduvai Gorge, often called the Cradle of Mankind. Mary and Louis Leake, archaeologists made their famous fossil discovery here in the late 1950s. 

Serengeti National Park, home to the Masai Mara Game Reserve, borders Kenya. Its residents include the “big five”: elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes and rhinos.

On the east side of the Great Rift Valley, Arusha sits in the foothills of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak at 4,566 m (14,980 ft.). This is the gateway to the northern safari circuit, with easy access to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara, Tarangire National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro. The elevation in this region, at 1,400 m (4,600 ft), keeps temperatures relatively cool despite its proximity to the equator; temperatures generally range from 10 to 30 C (50 to 86F), with little humidity due to the altitude.

Two airports – Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) on the eastern side and Arusha Airport [ARK], which serves primarily domestic flights – are connected to the main road to Tanzania’s most famous national parks, making it heavily traveled.

Today is designed for resting, recovering from jet lag, or throwing caution to the wind and exploring the area or around Arusha.

With advance arrangements, golf at Kilimanjaro Golf on Wildlife Estate, known locally as Kiligolf, on the Usa River, 30 minutes from Arusha. It is Tanzania’s first 18-hole course. David Jones designed the course. The front nine (9) holes feature lakes, waterfalls and cascades. The back nine (9) encompasses the lower part of the estate with additional water features. It closes with a challenging par three (3) with a risk-versus-reward closing.

Southwest of Arusha, Tarangire National Park is the fifth-largest park and covers 2,850 km² (1,100 square miles). Safaris in Tarangire offer an immersive wildlife experience, with large elephant herds; diverse game including lions, leopards and over 550 bird species; savannahs with scattered termite mounds; and iconic baobab trees with a hulking bases that store water and a cartoonish small crop of branches at the top that resemble an unwieldy haircut. Visitors can explore the park through open-vehicle game drives, nighttime safaris and hot air balloon rides (ADD-ON FEE??), while enjoying unique moments like bush breakfasts, sundowner drinks and starlit dinners. With its proximity to water sources such as the Tarangire River and natural springs near Oliver’s Camp, wildlife sightings are frequent and close.

The early morning light in Tarangire is beautiful, and animals are most active then. 

In April and May, at the end of the annual rains, the landscape is lush and dotted with wildflowers. August is the peak dry season in Tarangire, which means wildlife concentrations around dry riverbeds are extraordinarily high. The Tarangire River creates one of the best elephant experiences in Africa, drawing elephant herds – 200-300 gather at one time to drink and bathe. From August until October, herds of antelope and zebras pass through Tarangire. At this time, the park has the highest concentration of mammals in the country. Tarangire also has good predator sightings – lions often rest in the shade of acacias, and if you’re lucky, you might spot leopards or even tree-climbing pythons.

  • After settling into your tent and after lunch, you’ll head out for your first game drive with your private guide in the mid-afternoon. 
  • Your guide will work the areas along the Tarangire River and around the swamps, looking for the big herds and the park’s famous baobab trees. 
  • Return to camp around sunset for sundowners, then dinner under the stars around the campfire.
  • Early wake-up call (around 6:00 AM) with coffee and rusks before heading out for a full morning game drive. 
  • Your guide will track whatever’s moving – elephant herds on the march, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas and hopefully some big cats on the hunt.
  • Mid-morning, you might stop at a scenic spot for a bush breakfast – camp staff will pack you something special.
  • Then continue game viewing through the day, working different areas of the park.
  • Return to camp for lunch and a siesta during the heat of the day.
  • In the afternoon, you have options: another game drive, or a walking safari with an armed ranger. Oliver’s Camp offers this, and it’s a completely different perspective:  tracking animals on foot and learning about the smaller details of the bush.
  • Final evening game drive, sundowners and your last night at Oliver’s Camp.

Day #5 – Ground Transfer via Private Driver/Guide to Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA)

Rather than flying, which takes us backward through the Manyara Lake Region, this overland transfer is an experience in itself and one we deliberately include in the itinerary. The magnificent drive up in the highlands from Tarangire National Park takes about 3-4 hours, depending on where you’re staying on the crater rim.

Heading west, we leave the Tarangire River basin and head onto the main escarpment road. The landscape shifts quickly as we begin climbing the eastern wall of the Great Rift Valley, leaving behind the dry savannah. The road winds upward through farmland, small Iraqw villages and dense highland forests, gaining over 1,000 m (3,280 ft.) in elevation. On a clear day, the views behind us open up dramatically. We can see the Tarangire River floodplain stretching across the horizon, the same landscape we were driving through just hours earlier, now laid out like a map below us.

 
Located 180 km (111 miles) west of Arusha and northwest of Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, extends from the highlands, home to its namesake crater, and then extends northwest beyond the Olduvai Gorge and the short grasslands of the southern Serengeti and Lake Ndutu furthest west. The gorge is a paleoanthropological site often called the Cradle of Mankind due to its fossils dating back millions of years.
 
After passing through the Lodare Gate into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the  road climbs through montane forests thick with moss-draped trees. If we’re lucky, our guide will spot olive baboons, blue monkeys or even the occasional elephant moving through the forest canopy above. As you crest the rim, the Ngorongoro Crater reveals itself:  an 8,000-year-old volcanic caldera 20 km (12.4 miles) wide, named for the sound of the cattle bells of the local Maasai pastoralists. The crater’s floor shimmers with grassland and forest. Lake Magadi, 600 m (more than one-third of a mile) below, is here, too. No photograph can prepare you for this moment.
 

Wildlife does not adhere to the park’s boundaries. Discover excellent wildlife viewing, especially during peak calving season in January and February, when the NCA plains host the Great Wildebeest Migration and the birth of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest in a short span of time. This also brings predator activity, especially from large hyena clans, cheetahs and the return of African hunting dogs, which prey on newborns.

  • Your guide stops at the best viewpoints along the ascent for photos and to explain the geology of the Great Rift Valley, the tectonic forces that split the African continent, and the volcanic highlands we’re now entering.
  • Arrive in the highland town of Karatu around midday.
  • We stop for lunch at Africana Galleria, a locally owned restaurant and art gallery set in lush gardens. The food is fresh, locally sourced and a welcome change of pace from camp dining. The gallery showcases Tanzanian art, Tinga Tinga paintings and handcrafted jewelry.
  • After lunch, we continue west through the Lodoare Gate into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
  • Arrive at Wilderness Crater’s Edge in the late afternoon.
  • Settle into your suite, take a moment on the deck to take in the view, and join the group for sundowners as the sun sets over the crater.
Descending into Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, reveals its massive scale – 20 km (12.4 miles) wide. It is a natural amphitheater teeming with life – herds of wildebeest and zebras graze on the plains, hippos wallow in the marshes, and lions bask on the open grasslands.
 
  • Our tour begins early, as we take the winding road down into the crater. With luck, we may encounter the rare black rhino, one of the last strongholds of this species in East Africa.
  • The morning is dedicated to unhurried game viewing, with our expert guide interpreting the crater’s unique ecology and introducing us to both iconic wildlife and its subtler inhabitants – from crowned cranes to golden jackals.
  • Midday, we retreat to a secluded picnic site on the crater floor. Here, a private bush lunch is elegantly set out: linen-draped tables, fine cutlery, chilled wines, fresh salads, grilled meats and handmade desserts. Attentive staff create the atmosphere of an al fresco dining room in the heart of one of Africa’s most extraordinary landscapes.
  • After lunch, we continue exploring, seeking out lesser-visited corners of the crater:  forested groves where elephants feed quietly. In the soda lake, flamingos gather in a blush-pink haze to dine on algae, and nearby hidden swamps teem with birdlife.
  • In the late afternoon, we ascend the rim, a fitting conclusion to a day that marries raw wilderness with elevated comfort.

The Serengeti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site,  is perhaps the most famous African wilderness area, its name synonymous with the notion of safari for nearly 100 years. It covers 14,750 km² (5,700 square miles) of premier game viewing in Acacia woodlands, open grasslands and undulating savannahs interspersed with seasonal rivers.

The park’s northern side borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and, together with several other smaller reserves and conservation areas, forms the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem.

North of the southern grasslands lies the central part of the Serengeti, a beautiful area with wide-open plains as far as the eye can see, dotted with stunning landscapes of kopjes (granite rock outcroppings), grasslands and seasonal rivers. The central Serengeti, around the small settlement of Seronera in the Serengeti National Park, is big cat country year-round.  It has one of the highest densities of cats, especially lions, anywhere in Africa. Exceptional big cats – cheetahs – can also be found here. The eastern part of Central Serengeti was actually closed to tourists until just a few years ago and originally used as a cheetah research base. The Seronera River and its tributaries draw predators and prey in concentrations that rival anywhere on the continent.

The central Serengeti has an exceptional depth of wildlife that goes beyond the Big Five. Spotted hyena clans, bat-eared foxes, servals, jackals, topis, elands, and hundreds of bird species, including martial eagles, secretary birds, and lilac-breasted rollers, make every drive different from the last.

The first hour of light in the Serengeti is when the bush is most alive. Nocturnal predators return from their hunts, diurnal species wake and move, and the golden light across the endless plains stays with you long after you leave. The central Serengeti is large enough that three (3) days of driving barely scratches the surface, and each morning reveals something new.

From November to December, the savannah is green thanks to short periods of rain. From January to March and June to October, the savannah is dry with warm days and nights and little rain, drawing wildlife to the few sources of water. From May to July, the Great Migration occurs for impalas, zebras and wildebeests. April and May are the rainy season.

ENVI Sisini Serengeti - Central Serengeti, Seronera Itinerary

  • Say our goodbyes. This is your final morning on the crater rim at Craters Edge.
  • Our flight into the Serengeti is spectacular, crossing the Ngorongoro highlands and descending over the vast Serengeti plains.
  • The drive from the airport to camp takes about an hour and doubles as our first Serengeti game drive. This stretch of the central Serengeti is one of the most wildlife-dense corridors in the entire park. 
  • Our driver will stop for everything worth seeing in this area, and there is always something:  lion prides resting in the shade of kopjes, cheetahs scanning from termite mounds, herds of elephants and giraffes moving across the open plains. 
  • After lunch and time to settle in, you head out on your first afternoon game drive.
  • Your guide will work the river crossings, the kopjes (granite rock outcroppings), and the open grasslands, following the action as the light softens.
  • Sundowners are served at a scenic spot on the plains before returning to camp for dinner. The camp has two restaurants, a wine cellar, and a two-level fire pit area, where the group can gather under the stars and swap stories from the day.
  • An early departure for a dawn game drive. Your guide can follow the game wherever it leads, whether that’s tracking a leopard along a drainage line, watching a cheetah stalk through the grass, or sitting with a pride of lions as they wake and begin to move.
  • Mid-morning, we return to camp for a late breakfast.
  • The rest of the morning is yours. Schedule time at the camp’s spa, relax in the pool overlooking the savannah, or sit on your deck and use binoculars to spy on the natives.
  • After lunch, we head out again for a full afternoon drive. 
  • As the sun drops, your guide finds a spot on the open plains for sundowners.
  • Back at camp, dinner is served under the night sky with the sounds of the Serengeti all around you.

OPTION #1

  • For anyone in the group who wants the ultimate Serengeti experience, this morning offers a hot air balloon safari at dawn (approximately $575* per person, booked in advance).
  • The balloon departs before sunrise and floats silently over the plains for about an hour, as we watch the landscape come alive beneath us. Herds of wildebeest and zebra, hippo pools, and snaking river systems unfold below in a way no game drive can replicate. You land on the savannah for a champagne bush breakfast then transfer back to camp.

OPTION #2

  • For those not ballooning, a morning game drive explores a different area of the Seronera ecosystem.
  • Your guide will have been talking to the network of drivers and rangers over the previous two (2) days and will know exactly where to go for the best sightings.
  • The afternoon is your final game drive.
  • A Serengeti sunset has a quality unlike any other. The horizon is so flat and so vast that the sky becomes the entire view, shifting through every shade of gold, copper and crimson until the stars appear.
  • Your guide will find one last scenic spot for sundowners before returning everyone to camp for a farewell dinner around the fire pit.

Our stilted accommodations, set among acacia groves above the African landscape, seamlessly blend into our natural surroundings. Elegantly designed, our luxury tents are fully insulated, stand-alone suites available with either a king-size bed or twin beds. Suites feature locally sourced materials and natural textures that harmonize with the environment. Olakira Migration Camp follows wildlife migration between the river crossings in the north to the calving season in the southern Serengeti, bringing guests the closest possible view of the action. The canvas tents are designed to blend into the bush without leaving a trace, though that doesn’t mean our camps scrimp on comforts. The camp relocates to a southern base in Ndutu, in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, to be well-positioned for excellent wildlife viewing. The camp overlooks grassy plains where the wildebeest gather to give birth around February each year. Watch thousands of wobbly-legged young finding their feet, something they have to do quickly to avoid the watchful big cats that stalk these plains.

Start the day bright and early with a wake-up call and a cup of tea or coffee. Enjoy breakfast before you depart for a morning game drive (or have it packed as a picnic to take with you). Return to camp mid-morning and freshen up. After a leisurely lunch, enjoy some downtime to read a book or relax. Following afternoon tea, we depart for a game drive with sundowners. Return for drinks around the campfire and dinner under the stars.

Olakira Migration Camp has nine (9) tents. The tents have king-sized beds (twin beds are also available), en-suite bathrooms with flushing toilets and hot-water showers. The tents are perfectly designed for stargazing; a portion of each tent offers a 270° view from beneath a net, bringing the best of the outdoors indoors.

Dunia Camp, in Tanzania’s central Serengeti, is well positioned to explore three (3) excellent game-viewing areas: the Seronera River, the Moru Kopjes and the southern Serengeti plains. The Seronera River is a gathering place for many wildlife species, offering ample opportunities to spot predators in action. The Moru Kopjes are a cluster of old granite boulders favored by big cats, which use them as lookout points. You might even spot the rare black rhino. The southern plains are covered in lush grass from December to May, ideal for calving wildebeest.

Eight (8) spacious tents overlook the Serengeti National Park’s vast golden plains. Kick back on your private terrace or in the open-sided main tent with a chilled gin and tonic and enjoy the peace and stillness. Start your day soaring over the plains in a hot-air balloon, then end it dining under the stars in the bush.

Dunia Camp has seven (7) large, luxurious raised guest tents with fantastic verandah views, where you can enjoy morning coffee. The tent beds can be twin or double. A triple room is available on request. The tents all feature king-sized beds and en-suite bathrooms with a flushable toilet and a plumbed shower.

International Flights
Airfare to and from Tanzania. We are pleased to offer advice on the best routing, recommended airlines and booking tactics. We can arrange individual international flights.

Visa & Entry Requirements
Tanzania visa fees are (currently $100 USD$ dollar for most nationalities and can be obtained online at Tanzania Electronic Visa before travel) or on arrival, which is mostly recommended. We provide detailed visa application instructions and support throughout the process.

Travel & Medical Evacuation Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is mandatory for all safaris. We recommend policies that cover trip cancellation, medical emergencies and evacuation. AMREF flying doctor coverage is included, but this supplements, rather than replaces, your personal travel insurance.

Gratuities
Tips for guides, camp staff and drivers. While gratuities are discretionary, they’re an important part of safari culture. We provide detailed tipping guidelines with suggested amounts based on service quality and safari length.

Individuals – 30% of the trip price per person confirms the space. The balance is due 120 days prior to departure.

Payable in cash USD$ dollar, GBP£ pound sterling or EUR€ Euro, or by credit or debit card if the amount is greater than $25 USD. Credit cards incur a 3 percent surcharge; debit cards have no surcharge. American Express is not accepted.

Cancellation Policy

Individuals:

  • More than 120 days prior to departure, a full refund will be issued, less a 5% cancellation fee.
  • 120 days to 60 days – 50% refund. If the canceled space is resold and the trip departs full, a refund will be issued, less a 5% administrative fee.
  • Less than 60 days prior to departure – No refund unless the canceled space is resold and the trip departs full, in which case a refund will be issued, less a 5% administrative fee.
